You've nailed it: practice! Ideally most knots are tied with "muscle memory".

Thank you for this knot and demonstration.

I can attest to your muscle memory primacy in knot-tying. After a dozen years of stupid rabbit and tree "mnemonics" for tying a bowline, I fumbled the knot when the yard tug I was aboard as a summer student was taking a destroyer 's mooring line. The tug's master told me not to come back Monday if I couldn't tie a bowline with my eyes closed or behind my back. He then spent five minutes putting the muscle memory into me, and it has worked for fifty years.

I will spend some quality time this week with your knot. Thanks again.

Not kidding around....just a few days ago, this knot was in my mind and I knew it was out there, and I sort of wished I'd been a sailor like my daddy was (Navy Commander), but nope. I just had to tie 3 goofy simple knots even though I knew there were better ones.

So seriously - thank you for this.

It is appreciated by me.

How many damn post you gonna have about this knot?

I posted my first attempt here:

https://buffaloken.substack.com/p/whisper-of-the-wolf

Now, I already know this, I already know the image of the knot real that I posted in the link above is NOT the knot you were describing, but I'm going to inform you that I think I could describe the knot you were trying to describe....the act of making it.....more simply than you described it.

Besides that - I think the knot image I posted is almost just as good and way easier to make on the fly!

Hey - what going on - should I keep subscribing here or not?

It sounds like you received another message about that knot: I haven't done anything to make that happen! (Haven't looked at that article for a long time).

Some glitch in Substack , I guess.

I read the instalment you linked to, above: very interesting. Good to hear from someone with experience.

Jonathan R -

Thanks for recognizing the hint of "tongue in cheek" of my message above....Honestly I said to my wife, I've been meaning to practice this knot you discussed and I finally got around to it yesterday. I think I need to try again to see if I can actually make the one you have demonstrated, but I did come up with another sort of knot that I suspect is going to be useful in the future.....I think as was discussed above - the key is "muscle memory" - and that means one has to practice to learn tying a good knot with skill.

Best to you,

Ken

I'll tell more. My sweetie, the love of my life, had acquired some blinds for us to place in the screened in area on our deck when in the afternoon sometimes the light comes in really strong.....and so these screens were the bamboo types that unfurl and have a simple mechanism for holding the blind in place. Well, all I can say is knowledge of knots is beneficial when trying to use a screen of this nature and set it up, so once again - thank-you.

I'm gonna study this and get some muscle memory practice in - in hopes of a better future. A simpler one in a way, but more nuanced is what I think it will be.....
